About the artist

As a student of Art and Design in the late 1970s, the early years were divided between ceramics, landscape painting and life drawing. A long interest in sketching and exploring has been the background to settling in the West Highlands of Scotland in the late 1900s.

Rob paints mainly in watercolour which he considers the ideal medium to interpret the atmospheric changes of colour and light over the mountains and seascapes. Rob's pictures include over the years many studies of Northern Scotland from Moray in the east, the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides in the West and Orkney in the North. His abiding subjects, however, are the wild glens, sea views and winding roads from Loch Torridon to the solitary peaks of west Sutherland.

He shares Solas Gallery on the shores of Gairloch with the beautiful contemporary paintings of partner, Lyn Beckett and there a display of all his current work can be seen.

About  the work

Larger paintings and occasional small watercolours

can be viewed here in Gallery 1, 2 and 3.They are usually between medium and large - some over a metre wide.  Majestic panoramas of mountain and sea are the inspiration for most of this work. The subjects are primarily Wester–Ross but increasingly further afield, from Sutherland to Argyll, Skye and the Islands.

Smaller paintings

cover a wide range of more spontaneous ‘en plein-air’ and studio work ( depending on the weather!). Subjects vary from a closely observed cameo of the enchanting and abundant natural world on our doorstep to the changing light on landscapes of mountain, sea and glen. On the few  days when the weather is unkind, the studio is the place to paint small still life compositions from found, natural and 'everyday' objects.
